Friendly attendant who showed off our dogs to everyone else who came through. Very talkative and welcoming. We fueled up gas and coffee, spent time talking to locals including a very nice police officer. I was reminded of my home town before it became suburnanized.

RJ's has the best catfish sandwiches known to man. If you get a dressed catfish sandwich, here is what you'll notice: the long, soft and chewy hoagie bun and vegetables are just right, the catfish is meaty and earthy and perfectly breaded and fried, the service behind the counter is friendly, the prices are awesome for what you get, and as soon as you eat one, you'll think, "Who would have expected it? I just ate the best seafood (or riverfood or lakefood or whatever 😉 sandwich I have ever eaten in my entire life, and it was in a gas station in Shoals, Indiana." Don't tell me about some shrimp po-boy you had in New Orleans, or lobster roll you had in Maine, or crab cake sandwich from Maryland, or codfish sandwich you had at Mike Linnig's in Louisville. Eat this and get back to me, fancy pants. I'm usually the only one I see in there wearing a tie and everyone is nice to me, so if your kids are decked out in Vineyard Vines stuff, it's fine, whatever. You can teach them about why some guys don't like sleeves.

Yes, it's a gas station. But RJ's doesn't have good food "for a gas station." I went to Harry and Izzy's (next to St. Elmo's, same owners) in downtown Indianapolis this past weekend, and it's always great. But if the catfish sandwich from RJs was on the menu up there, the more sophisticated, urbane people of Naptown would say "dang, this is good." Away from the interstates and cities, instead of depressing, dirty, fast food chain franchises, clean, locally owned gas stations feed hungry people who are in a hurry. And those of us that live or work in Martin County are thankful.
